Masks from the Pacific Rim

Ritual, war, theatre; the major facets of human experience are all represented in these ethnic masks. Yet the geographic remoteness and political isolation of areas bordering this huge ocean allowed cultures of great difference to flourish. Others like Hong Kong became the marketplaces and cross roads of the East.

The masks of this region invite the reader to trace the routes of trade and adventure that eventually connected them. Dahl was born and raised on the edge of the Canadian Pacific Rim, Dahl and his family recently moved to Calgary and presently resides at the foot of the Rockies in Western Canada. Dahl and his friends traveled to Thailand, a kingdom never colonized; to Hawaii's once-remote islands; to Japan's islands of sophisticated culture; and of course everyone visits Hong Kong. Follow the footsteps in this book.
